1. What is the difference between Restorer2000, Restorer2000 PRO and Restorer2000 PRO Network?

2. I paid for the software but I haven't received my registration key. What could be a problem?

This could be occurring for several reasons:
  • You are not logged in with the same e-mail address you typed into the order form, so you don't receive the e-mail in your inbox.
  • You may have typed the e-mail address incorrectly in the form.
  • Your ISP (Internet Service Provider) has a spam filter set up to block e-mails or e-mails with attachments from Bitmart.net e-mail addresses. The e-mail address from which this is sent is office@bitmart.net and the e-mail has a small attached text file with the registration key copy. Check to see if your ISP has filters set up to block this particular e-mail address. Additionally, check your inbox for any junk filter folders. Some mail applications have junk filter settings in place and direct suspect mail into a "junk mail" subfolder. For example, Microsoft Outlook has a folder called "Junk E-mail" and a Rule setting might be in place to send mail with addresses of "office@..." to your "Junk E-mail" folder.
You can also access your profile on our server through Customer Support Center , change your e-mail and request the registration key resending.


3. What is the best way to restore data from a hard drive on which new bad sectors are constantly appearing?
The less you work with the drive which is apparently dying, the higher chances to restore the data successfully. You can create an image of the drive to avoid working with the drive. Once the image is created, you may open this image to restorer lost data as it was the actual drive. You may create the image for a partition/logical disk, or the part of, or entire hard drive. Read the Image section in the Restorer2000 help to learn how to create and work with images. Please note that to store an image file you need free space equal to at least the size of the object which image you want to create.
You may specify the number of attempts to read bad sectors in the Read Attempts option (the Tools menu -> Options -> the Main tab). The fewer the number of read attempts, the fewer chances that Restorer2000 will read data from the bad sectors successfully. The larger the number of read attempts, the higher risk that the hard disk will be broken during reading the data from the bad sectors and the longer Restorer2000 would read the disk.


4. What is the SmartScan technology?
SmartScan is a unique technology for fast disk structure restoring. The data is restored from the information obtained from disk scan. A physical or logical disk, disk region, or disk image saved as a file can be scanned. SmartScan can restore all previous partitions if the scanned disk has some direct or indirect partitions data on a hard drive. SmartScan allows you to interactively control and modify these data during scanning.

5. I deleted files or folders and cleaned the Recycle Bin accidentally. What can I do?
a. First, do not write anything to the logical disk. Run Restorer2000, select the drive, then the logical disk, and click the Open Drive Files button. When file enumeration is complete, you can find deleted files in the Files (right) pane. Use the Find, File Mask, Find Next, Find Previous buttons to perform a search for a particular file.
b. If those files cannot be found, you have to scan the whole hard drive. Return to the Device/Disk view (the Back (Select Drive) button), select the hard drive and click the Scan button. When Restorer2000 finishes scanning, select the green partition in the right pane, click the Open Drive Files button and try to find the files in the recognized partition.

6. I've deleted a partition... Moreover, I've created new partitions where the old ones were located. How can Restorer2000 help me?
Scan the drive on which the partitions resided. Try to find the deleted partition in the list of the recognized partitions in the right pane. Partitions File System, size and start position can be of the help. Click the Open Drive Files button and try to find the files in that partition.
Remember, you can correct parameters for the partitions being found. See the Disk Scan help section for more details.

7. Why do I see more files after scanning then I see in Windows Explorer? How I can view deleted files only?
Restorer2000 works with a hard drive at a low level, not through the driver of the file system. It views files that the operating system does not recognize.
If you want to view deleted files only, clear the Existing Files option in the File Types dialog (the File Mask button).


8. What if I try to recover files that are not deleted?
Nothing bad will happen. Restorer2000 will just copy those files. Their NTFS permissions will be cleared, though. Even files locked by the system (such as registry hives or a pagefile) can be copied.

9. Does Restorer2000 work on NT Server?

10. What does Region mean? How can I use it?
Sometimes, only smaller area of a disk needs to be scanned/copied. Such area is called a region. A region can be created on any object in the Restorer2000's Device/Disk panel.
A Region is determined by its Start and Size parameters. Start is a point where scanning/copying starts. Size is the area size for scanning/copying.
You can use
B - size in bytes (by default)
KB - size in kilobytes
MB - size in megabytes
GB - size in gigabytes
Sec - size in sectors


11. What if I try to recover a deleted file to the same logical disk where it was located? Is there any risks?
NEVER DO THIS! Or you may completely lose the data you want to restore! Your operating system considers deleted files as just free space on the disk, so it may decide to write the restored data over the area where the still un-restored data reside. In that case the un-restored data will be gone forever. If you need to restore data from an entire hard drive, you must save the restored data to another hard drive.

12. Is Restorer2000 able to recover alternative data streams?
Absolutely. Check that the Recover alternative data streams option is selected on the Recovery dialog message.

13. I see folders named as '$$$Folder58448' or so. All they have a red X on them. What does that mean?
A folder named like '$$$Folder58448' means that the folder itself has not been found on the disk but some references to one have. For example folders 'My documents', 'Work', 'Photos' have been found, and all they have one and the same parent folder. The folders description has not been actually found on the disk, so its name is unknown and therefore presented as '$$$Folder58448'. The descriptions of such folders could possibly be outside of the scan area - try to expand the region or scan the entire hard drive. If this does not help, descriptions of folders have been most likely overwritten later on.

14. What does 'Fixup out of bounds' mean?
An MFT record (the one which contains information about a particular file) has some self-validation values. One of them is known as 'fixup'. So if an MFT record is broken, the following warnings can appear:
'[FileId: XX] Fixup out of bounds'
'[FileId: XX] Fixup XX is XX, but should be XX'.
They are not fatal errors. However they mean that the data describing file system information for a file is probably overwritten. If so, there is a risk that file cannot be restored successfully.


15. I lost my data on a hard disk. Is there any guidelines I should follow before trying to recover them?
Any write operation can overwrite deleted files for good. So: do not write anything to the disk where the lost data resided, do not run any disk utilities such as chkdsk and defragmenters, do not reboot computer - Windows can start the chkdsk utility during its start-up procedure. Also, It is a good idea to create an image of the disk with deleted files (select Create Image File in the Drive menu) and save it on another disk. You may well use an external USB hard drive to store the image file. This image can be used later instead of the original disk ? this is the way to save the current state of the disk. All versions of Restorer2000 (Demo, Standard, Pro, Pro Network) support image files creation.

16. Can the program restore a file that has been deleted and a new file with the same name created?
It does not matter whether the new file name is the same as the old one or not. Restorer2000 will restore a file as long as its information is not overwritten.

17. Restorer2000 has found more partitions after the scan than I actually have on the disk. Why and what should I do?
Restorer2000 thoroughly scans a hard disk and tries to find all partitions that exist or existed on the disk. After scanning a disk Restorer2000 builds and shows a list of all partitions which traces have been found on that disk. If such list contains a too large number of found partitions (about one hundred or more), this indicates that the file system on the disk is seriously corrupted.
In any case, you need to find a correct partition to successfully restore lost data. If you are restoring data from the existing partition, you should select the green one in the right pane. Otherwise, partitions, which file system, start point, and cluster size look similar to the correct parameters are preferred, so explore them at first. Try to restore a file which size is greater than 2KB. If you find that the recovered file has a correct content, than you found the correct partition.


18. Is it safe to use Restorer2000? Can it destroy un-restored data on a disk?
Restorer2000 writes to a disk only from its hex editor (when writing is enabled) or when it is explicitly directed to save files on this disk. Therefore, you should be very carefully using the hex editor. In all other modes and actions, Restorer2000 performs a read-only and never modifies data on partitions and disks directly. Even them it creates virtual volume sets, regions, empty spaces, or loads images, Restorer2000 creates only virtual objects that do not affect actual data on the disk.

19. I have a broken volume set/stripe set/raid5 volume. Moreover, I cannot see the volume. I only see the drives from which the volume was created. Can Restorer2000 help me in this situation?
Yes. Create a virtual volume of the appropriate type. You will have a new virtual volume which can be processed like a regular disk, so it can be opened, scanned for files, and so on. Read the Volume Sets and RAIDs help section for more details.

20. One of the drives from which my volume set/stripe set/raid5 was created is physically damaged and its data cannot be read. What to do?
Try to substitute this volume with an empty space. Chances are that you will be able to restore some of the data from such volume. Read the Volume Sets and RAIDs help section for more details.

21. I created a volume set/stripe set/raid5 and scanned it. A large number of recognized partitions appeared but I could not find deleted files. What is wrong?
It may be the order of disks, or block size, etc. Please note that disks should be placed in the same order as they were in the original volume set. If this order is incorrect, you must change it by moving the selected disks in the correct order. Moreover, the Block size and Block order parameters must be set the same as for the original volume set. If the order, Block size, or Block order parameters are not correct, data on the parent disks will not be damaged, but they cannot be restored.

22. I have Restorer2000 installed on my computer. But data are lost on another computer in our local network. What to do?
If you have Restorer2000 Pro Network, you may run Restorer2000's Remote Engine on the computer with the lost data. Restorer2000 will be able to connect to that computer and restore data from that computer almost in its usual way. Read the Data Recovery over Network help section for more details.
